Field of Stinky Dreams

I am so pissed right now.
For the past two years our landlord has decided to allow dogs on the property. The understanding was that the dogs must be “small” and of course, they must be picked up after.
Well recently a couple of large dogs have moved onto the property. I know this because I see the size of their shit on a now daily basis. We have a back sidewalk that leads down to the parking lot and everyday I notice more and more dog shit in the snow on either side of the sidewalk. But today we found several large turds melting in the slush on the sidewalk.
Seriously? Look at this: cp1_0123091501-791704Each of those dark spots is a dog bomb. There’s gotta be ten or fifteen pounds of it out there.
How is behavior like this still allowed? Fairview Park has an ordinance against not cleaning up after your dog (505.02(c)) We’ve spoken to management and they claim that they can’t take action until they know who is doing it. Well, I’ll tell ya what… by not stopping one, you’ve basically allowed every dog owner out here to ignore their dog’s dumps.
I know there are a few dog owners out here who are responsible and actually do care enough to pick up after their dogs. But either their number is dwindling, or we’re getting more dogs.
All I know is that this is gross.

Taking out the trash

Since we live in the asshole of Fairview Park, the common laundry room outside our apartment has looked like this since mid April:

Once upon a time the old maintenance guys put some stuff in our laundry room “just for the night”.  Eight months later, no one has taken any initiative to clean the mess up.  In fact our neighbors have actively taken to making it worse.  Another couple of weeks and it’ll crawl out into the hallway.  By next month it’ll make it’s way into our apartment.  By mid-March we’ll be in the newspaper under the byline: “Family of three found dead under massive pile of lint, soda cans, carpet scraps and discarded underpants.”  (Yeah, I know… gross.)

As of tonight it looks like this:

I see it as saving my family’s lives.

Happy early Christmas, Georgetown.

Flood!

I came home from work early today because I had a doctors appointment. About twenty minutes before I was to leave Carrie and I were sitting in the dining room talking.  All at once we both heard water running.
“What the Hell is that?”

Water was pouring out of the range hood above the stove in the kitchen and above the hot water tank on the other side of the kitchen wall.

The floor under the stove... too little too late.

The floor under the stove... too little too late.

Carrie grabbed a handful of towels and we got bowls under some of the streams when we hear a knock on the door. It’s the maintenance guy. “I have to turn the water off to the entire building!” he tells us. “Yeah, no shit.” I say “We’ve got a bit of a situation here too”.

It seems that the guy in the apartment above us was getting his hot water tank replaced. When the plumber went to open the drain on the tank, the entire valve cracked off and water went everywhere. Thank god it was only a thirty gallon tank, but I think we wound up with about twenty gallons in our apartment.

Well, I canceled my doctor’s appointment and we started the cleanup. It really didn’t take all that long (although I left Carrie to deal with it while I picked Ashley up from school). Right now all that’s left is to push the stove back into place and plug it back in. Something I think we’ll leave until later (maybe tomorrow).

Now that dinner is ruined, we’re gonna get the hell out of here and try to relax a little. What a fun afternoon.

Alas Poor Rheem… we hardly knew ye… NOT!!

Today is NEW HOT WATER TANK DAY!! NEW HOT WATER TANK DAY!!

Yeah – a couple days ago Carrie heard this noise in the boiler room/closet area. She opened the door and saw a stream of water pouring out of one of the pipes near the hot water tank. (On the subject – this pipe should (legally) have been hooked up to the hot water tank’s TPR (temperature-pressure relief) valve, but never was. The old maintenance guy? Kind of an asshole.) Anyway, Carrie calls the landlord and tells them we got water pouring onto the floor in our closet.

A few hours later…

The landlord shows up and tells Carrie that his wife told him the leak was in the laundry room?!?! He said once he figured he was given wrong info and realized the leak was in somebody’s apartment he got here alot faster. By that time the leak had stopped (luckily). But he takes one look at the detached TRP drain and freaks out. “That shouldn’t be like that!!” (duh! – but in his defense, when was he last in our apartment? never?) Carrie told him that we sent them a letter about the white chips in the water too. And that the tank is generally a piece of shit. (Well, maybe she left that part out.)

The plumber (who happens to be the Landlord’s son) left here a couple hours ago. Ironically, the TRP drain still isn’t hooked up. He’s coming back to do that tomorrow morning. He couldn’t do it today because he wound up bringing us a 40 gallon tank to replace a 30 gallon tank! (BONUS! EXTRA-LARGE-HOT-WATER-TANK HAPPY DANCE!!!)

Because the new tank is bigger eveything had to be resized. He asked if we would mind if he came back to finish in the morning. Not a problem. It’s NEW HOT WATER TANK DAY!!

Mental Block

It’s been a week since I posted something – so I figured I’d better get off my ass and come up with something.

Except I can’t think of anything.

Oh, sure, we need a ton of money to pay all the bills (car repair, Disney, food…) and I really need a raise at work.

…and the weather sucks. Today was almost 60 degrees and channel 8 is teasing us with commercials to tune in for the forecast tonight (lemme guess? Snow?) We’ve lived in Cleveland a long time – what else is new?

…and we sent a long, detailed letter to the landlord with color pictures of the crappy hot water tank – so we’ll see if they decide to do anything about it.

…unlike the roof of the garage. It leaks over our car. It doesn’t leak anyplace else. Just over the Saturn. I called the landlord and they actually suggested that we park outside in the parking lot instead. When I hung up I realized we’re clearly out-classed with an argument like that.

Well, look at that. I was able to think of something after all.

There must be something in the water…

So I wrote a letter to the landlord. We’re gonna include it with the rent check in February. The hot water tank has been getting worse. We’ve been getting more of those little white chips in the aerator. Check it out:

It’s not getting any better. I hate to think we’re gonna need a new hot water tank (mostly because there’s alot of our own stuff that we’ll need to move out of the way for anybody to get to the hot water tank before they can work on it) but on the other hand, I hope my landlord agrees that we need a new one. I don’t think it’s worth trying to fix something like this. I did some online research yesterday and found out that the tank is almost 10 years old and has been out-of-warranty for almost 5 years. It’s covered in corrosion and I think it’s leaking on the floor.
It’s glory days are over.
