Prevent websites from resizing Firefox’s browser window

Firefox is my browser of choice. Although we happen to have a rather large number of Opera followers at the TS forums, I have been left unconvinced and kept faithful to Firefox ever since version 1.5 came out. At that point the browser was more secure than ever, rock solid, very polished and popular enough that you had dozens of extensions to customize it to your liking. I haven’t looked back ever since.

Now, one of the most obvious tweaks you can apply to your Firefox installation is removing the annoyance of letting websites resize the browser window at their will. Despite of the more sophisticated pop-up blocker that comes in most recent versions of the browser, many websites still do away with popping those up and in many cases resizing either your main window or maximizing the pop-up window to get your full attention (just before you hit the X button).

You won’t even need an add-on to do this.

1. Go to Tools > Options

2. Click on the Content tab

3. Next to where it says “Enable Javascript”, click on Advanced

4. Uncheck the option “Move or resize existing windows”

You’re done! I will try to bring more of these basic, and other not so basic tips on a regular basis to the blog.

Too many #$%^&*@ bookmarks!

I'm drowning in bookmarks.

A long time ago I decided that I must have my bookmarks with me wherever I go, so I opted for a de.icio.us account. Actually two of them – one for myself and one for Creepy Cleveland. I even talked my wife into a del.icio.us account (mostly because I usually managed to eradicate her bookmarks when I had to reinstall windows at home). Then they got bought out by Yahoo. Not that I had a problem with that, but I started hearing rumblings that they were going to change a bunch of things and I noticed the system getting slower and slower.

I started looking around for an alternative. I couldn't find one (a free one) that outdid del.icio.us's featureset and still allowed me to work the way I wanted.

I kinda forgot all about my dissatisfaction with del.icio.us until the new Firefox came out. The 'awesomebar' in Firefox 3 made me rethink the advantages of hosting my bookmarks locally. Soon after, I found out about Foxmarks. Foxmarks is another bookmarking service that allows you to keep your bookmarks local to the browser, but also syncs them to other computers through an online account. The awesomebar sprang to life. My (personal) del.icio.us account started to collect dust.

Today I'm revisiting the online bookmark war again. I like the ability to quickly get to my bookmarks and history through the awesomebar in Firefox, but I just can't beat del.icio.us's javascripts to quickly create linkrolls and tagrolls.

I want to put bookmarks on simplyodd.com. I want to weed out all the old / no longer used bookmarks in my collection. I want a quick and easy way to get to my bookmarks. I love the awesomebar!

For now – I've moved all my del.icio.us bookmarks into Foxmarks for local browsing and am planning on using the now-empty del.icio.us account for hosting public bookmarks and creating tag/linkrolls for the site.

I think I may keep the bookmarks that I would otherwise mark as 'not shared on del.icio.us' in Foxmarks and categorize the stuff I want for linkrolls on del.icio.us for the web site. Bookmarks that don't fit either category? I guess I'll drop 'em.
