Summerfest (a video essay)

We spent yesterday at Summerfest, which is Fairview Park’s annual summer carnival.  We met Lori and her kids there.  Soon after her brother-in-law Andrew came by and spent the day.  What follows are excepts of the day via my cellphone:

Lori’s daughter Ally spent some time on the kiddie train:

Lori and Andrew argued about who loved me more:

We spent some time watching the kids from “School of Rock”:

…and Kadie danced:

There was some kind of juggler there (although Andrew thought I was filming him):

Embedding Phone Videos

I’m trying out a new WordPress plugin that allows me to embed my converted cellphone videos.

I’ve had this video of my great-niece on my phone for a couple years.  It’s extra cute when she sees herself in the front screen of the phone and clobbers me.

I took this on July 1, 2007.  Abbey had just turned 1!

Converting my cellphone videos

I’ve got an LG ENV2 cell phone and it takes pretty decent videos (for a cell phone). The problem is that I’m stuck watching the finished videos on a tiny screen. If I play the videos I copy off the SD card onto my computer I don’t get any audio.

One solution is to upload the videos directly to YouTube:

YouTube does the conversion and maintains the audio in the resulting video.

But what if I don’t want to go through the trouble of uploading and waiting for the video to be converted? Linux to the rescue!

First of all, install ffmpeg and mencoder:
(actually, I’m not sure if you need ffmpeg or not. In my case it didn’t hurt anything.)

sudo apt-get install mencoder ffmpeg

Then copy the video(s) to your computer, open a terminal window and change to the directory in which you’ve copied the files.

Then run mencoder:

mencoder input_filename.3g2 -o output_filename.avi -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc
  • mp3lame is the used audio-codec (here mp3)
  • lavc is the used video-codec (here libavcodec)

After the conversion is complete you should have a playable (audio included!) .avi file in the same folder! Easy.

Here’s a video I just pulled off my phone and converted –
Happy Birthday Max!

Stuck and Bored.

I got stuck at the lift bridge on Columbus Road waiting for a boat to go by. It took forever to get the damn bridge up.

Personally, I thought the boat would be bigger.

How To Convert Any Video File Format Under Linux

This video tutorial will explain how to losslessly convert any video file format, including quicktime .mov, flash .flv files, open source .ogv, .mp4, .wmv, .asf and more. I show you how to install ffmpeg, check the formats and codecs available to you, convert a file to a new format (windows media and .asf in this example) without any loss in quality during the decoding and encoding process, and create and run a script file that will enable you to run a batch conversion on any number of files at the same time.

Anyone who has tried to convert multimedia files in Windows knows how challenging it can be. There are a ton of different programs out there to do it, but most of them either leave a watermark in your video, lower the resolution of your video, or both, unless you pay hundreds of dollars. ffmpeg can do this for you quickly, conveniently, and completely free – and can even be used in Windows! This video was created for Ubuntu, but will work for most Linux distributions, and the code you learn here to convert a file can be applied to the Windows version as well, though Windows’ scripting language is different so you will need to adjust the batch conversion script.

Single File Conversion

sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

ffmpeg -formats (lists all available formats based on the currently installed codecs, to be used with -vcodec, -acodec, and -f)

ffmpeg -i inputfilename.ext -vcodec wmv2 -sameq -acodec wmav2 -f asf outfile.asf

ffmpeg – start ffmpeg

(-i inputfilename.ext – tells ffmpeg the file name and extension from which to convert)

(-vcodec wmv2 – use video codec wmv2)

(-sameq – use same video quality as source file)

(-acodec wmav2 – use audio codec wmav2)

(-f asf – choose output format, sometimes known as a container, in this case asf)

Bonus Batch Conversion

sudo touch convert.sh (here we use touch to create a blank file, not always necessary to do that rather than through a text editor but it is safer with permissions and such)

gksu gedit convert.sh (this is only available for gnome desktops, i.e. ubuntu and the like, so you can tell people to use whatever text editor they like)

sudo chmod 0777 convert.sh (like last time, chmod changes file or directory permissions, in this case giving access to everyone to read, write, execute the script)

./convert.sh (runs the script convert.sh on files in the /Videos directory)

ls (ls -l lists all files and directories plus permissions)

script:

for f in *.MOV; do ffmpeg -i “$f” -vcodec wmv2 -sameq -acodec wmav2 “${f%.MOV}.asf”; done

Funny/Sad

These are hilarious. But it’s one of those “it’s funny ’cause it’s true” things. And since it’s true, it’s a little sad. But still funny. And true.

Your Linux is Ready

I found these videos and wanted to see if I could embed them in the new blog:

Funny, huh?

I’ve been messing around with Linux for probably about ten years. Not to say I’m very good at using it however. My first foray into linux-land in the mid 90′s was a floppy disk install of slackware that I never could figure out. The first three or four computers I tried installing linux on had problems with proprietary video drivers so I never could get X working. Back then I was still using a modem so setting up ppp was kinda fun, but once I got onto the internet I didn’t have any pictures, so the fun didn’t last long.

Fast fowarding ten years – I’m now administering my own linux server at home (and one at work) and am the proud owner of a EEE PC that I bought with linux and replaced with another distribution.

Linux has come far in the last decade. And now that Microsoft has tripped over it’s own feet with Vista, more and more people are willing to try an alternate operating system.

If the last ten years are any indication – Microsoft and Apple had better prepare for some stiff competition.

Ashley the Pre-Frosh

Ashley’s about a week away from graduating 8th grade and the end-of-the-year festivities have begun. Last week we attended the honor’s ceremony.
Ashley was awarded the 4.0 GPA award.
Again.
She also got the Honor Roll award for being on the Honor Roll for the first three quarters this year.
Again.
Honor’s classes in High School await.

Today was the junior high talent show. It was held during the day, so Carrie and her Mom went up to the school to see the show. Carrie took the video camera and tonight I edited the video down and posted it on YouTube.

Ashley sang ‘Slipped Away’ by Avril Lavigne. I grabbed the video of just her song. Also from YouTube, check it out:

Xmas Spirit Killer

For the very first time ever, Jim decided to make a dish to contribute to our office Xmas party. Jim’s most usual contribution to any office party is something easy like a 2-liter bottle of soda or just a cash donation. Needless to say, we were all skeptical when he insisted that we’d be surprised when he showed up on party day with a homemade Taco Casserole.

Party day dawned and the unthinkable happened: Getting off the bus outside of work, Jim slipped on a patch of ice and down he went. Down, also, went the Homemade Taco Casserole in the nice glass casserole dish.

Jim survived the incident with a tear in his pants and several minor scratches and abrasions.

We all agreed that next year he should just bring a 2-liter bottle of soda or maybe just donate some cash.

Talent Show 2007

Ashley’s come a long way in the two years since she was denied entry into the school talent show. Today the middle school held their talent show for parents and teachers. Unfortunately, the school scheduled the show for 1:00pm so I, among many other parents, couldn’t make it. Carrie did, however, and she took the video camera.

Wow.

Ashley performed the song: ‘Everybody’s Fool’ by Evanescence (yeah, I spelled it wrong in the video below…). While she professed to us that she only got a little nervous moments before she hit the stage, you could never tell. She had a couple problems transitioning from the verse to the chorus, but she said that the music was hard for her to hear and it messed up her timing a little bit. But for a seventh grader with no formal voice training she was pretty awesome.

She’s already decided that she’s joining the Concert Choir in eighth grade. We can’t wait for next year’s show.

Happy Birthday Abbey!

Yesterday was my great-niece’s first birthday. Today the family gathered for the party. Like most every one year old, Abbey was far more interested in wrapping paper and already-opened-envelopes than she was in her presents.

The highlight of the day was a family tradition… the smash cake. Although I think the smash cake is celebrated by lots of families with little ones, very often the birthday boy or girl just looks confused at the cake or maybe sticks a finger or two in the frosting.

Not Abigail.

Abbey went cake-crazy. Take a look.

New Toy Test

So I finally broke down and bought a video camera. I knew I didn’t want a camera that recorded on any kind of VHS and I wanted something from which I could transfer videos to the computer.

I wound up buying a JVC GR-D370u. It takes MiniDV tapes and apart from a weird noise issue we had with the first one (which we exchanged a week later) it’s pretty nice. Of course in order to make the video play nicely online, I have to compress it a whole lot and that kinda makes the video quality all pixelated. But I could also transfer the vids to DVD and maintain the quality. Hmmm… I’ll have to try that next.

Now I have to figure out the best way to get my videos online. YouTube? Google Video? Just plain old embedded flash? I don’t know.

Until I decide, enjoy this embedded video clip of my family preparing to serve St Patrick’s Day dinner at the American Legion a couple weeks ago. NOTE: I replaced the video with a YouTube version… too many people were having a hard time with the ‘right-click > Play’ thing…)
